On a torsion-spring door, grooved drums sit on the spring shaft and receive the lifting cables as the door opens. They work as part of a matched counterbalance system. Drum selection and cable routing must suit the door’s lift arrangement; a similar-looking part is not enough to establish compatibility.

What an assessment should cover

These symptoms do not prove the drum itself is defective. The assessment should also check cables, shaft support, spring balance and track condition. If a drum needs replacement, its specifications must match the system. The technician should then verify cable seating and balanced operation before returning the door to use.
