Small cables carry a critical load

Lifting cables work with the spring system to raise and lower the door. Fraying, broken strands or a cable that has come off its drum can interrupt even movement. The visible cable problem may also be a symptom of another fault, so the complete lifting system needs inspection.

What an assessment should cover

A technician should inspect both cables, the drums, spring balance, bottom attachments and track alignment. Replacement cables must suit the manufacturer’s specifications for the door. Where a system uses two cables, their specifications should match. Correcting the reason a cable slipped is as important as fitting the replacement.

Signs it is time for service

• Loose strands or visible wear along a lifting cable
• One side of the door sits higher than the other
• A cable hangs slack or has left its drum
• The door binds or stops unexpectedly
